Choose a cue around the shift you actually work
If you wake at 16:00 for an overnight shift, an early-morning reading reminder may be poorly placed. Try a moment after waking, after your first meal or before leaving home. On rotating shifts, keep the cue recognisable even when the clock time changes. Read when you have an available moment and follow your workplace’s phone rules.
Prepare one short passage before the next shift. Leave a bookmark in your paper Bible or open the chapter you plan to read in your Bible app. This removes a decision from the moment when you would otherwise open a feed. The routine is a suggestion to try; Prayer First does not detect when you wake or import your rota.
An evening unlock ends at the local-day boundary
Prayer First’s core completion rule belongs to a local calendar date. For example, a Bible action completed at 22:00 on Monday counts for Monday. After local midnight, Tuesday has a separate completion state, and selected feeds can be protected again while your overnight shift continues.
The unlock lasts for the remaining local day. It is not a rolling 24-hour pass, and the app does not move the reset to the end of your shift. If you prefer to read after waking, remember that a pre-shift reading and a post-midnight break can fall on different dates. You can still read at your chosen moment; decide whether the calendar-day gate suits the phone boundary you need.
Keep work contact and travel tools available
A selected-app blocker and a notification setting do different jobs. Leaving an app unprotected does not guarantee that its alerts will sound. On iPhone, Focus can allow notifications from chosen people and apps; configure those exceptions separately.
- Choose one app used for optional scrolling. Keep calls, necessary messages, rota tools, authentication and maps outside Prayer First’s protected list.
- If the same app carries required work messages and distracting content, think carefully before protecting the entire app. Use its notification controls or choose a different feed to protect.
- Before your shift, open the tools you need while the selected feed is protected. Test an important call or message with someone you trust. Check silent mode and notification settings separately.
Set notification hours separately on iPhone
In iPhone Settings, open Focus and choose or create the profile you want. Review People and Apps, then use Add Schedule if you want that Focus to start automatically at a time. Recheck the hours when your rota changes.
Focus controls notifications and can change the screens you see. Allowing work notifications there does not change Prayer First’s protected-app selection or daily completion. Treat each control as a separate setting to test.
Use Android’s scheduled pause when that is the job you need
On supported Android phones, Settings → Digital Wellbeing → Focus mode lets you select apps to pause. While it is on, those apps cannot be used and their notifications are paused. Use Set a schedule for automatic hours; the menus and availability can vary by phone.
Keep required work apps out of that paused list too. If your main goal is to keep feeds closed throughout a whole shift, this kind of scheduled pause may fit better than a daily reading gate. It does not require Bible reading, and setting it up does not configure Prayer First.
Check the routine on a normal overnight shift
This guide explains the calendar-day policy and official phone settings. It does not verify midnight enforcement on every device, promise improved sleep or measure results for shift workers. If the reset repeatedly conflicts with your needs, use a configurable scheduled blocker and keep Bible reading as a separate habit.
- Complete your chosen Bible, paper Bible timer or journal action at a suitable moment. Check Prayer First’s completion state and a feed you selected to protect.
- When practical, check the displayed completion state and selected feed after local midnight. Leave your phone clock unchanged and do the check only when it is appropriate to use your phone.
- Review any mismatch: an unexpected reset, a missed work alert or a schedule that no longer fits. Adjust the relevant setting before relying on the routine again.

Try the habit on your phone
Prayer First’s free core puts Bible reading, a paper Bible timer or a journal action before selected feeds, with completion tied to the local day.
