First decide where your important messages arrive
Instagram DMs and Instagram’s feed live inside the same app. Prayer First does not offer a switch that blocks Reels while opening only the inbox. Selecting the app is a decision to make that whole app wait.
A message in a separate app is a different choice. For example, you can select Instagram while leaving your separate messaging app outside the protected selection. That does not guarantee message delivery: phone notification settings, network access and any other restrictions still matter.
Choose individual apps when messages cannot wait
Start with the particular feed you can leave closed. If Instagram itself is needed for work, leave it unprotected; keep your Bible-first cue and protect a different app instead. This leaves Instagram’s feed accessible too, so it is a compromise rather than a DM-only filter.
On iPhone, review any whole-category selections as well as individual apps. A selected category can cover an essential app that you did not select separately. Apple’s shielding system supports both applications and categories; Prayer First’s current selection flow uses those scopes. Prefer a narrow selection and test the app you need.
If your protected settings are locked by Strict mode, review the selection after your normal daily unlock. Do not depend on changing it during a work interruption.
Notification controls do not create a DM exception
Reducing alerts is a separate way to make an unprotected app less intrusive. Review Instagram’s own notification choices before turning off everything at phone level. Check which alerts you still need, then verify them in your normal routine.
Meta describes Instagram’s Sleep mode, formerly Quiet mode, as silencing notifications and sending an automatic reply to DMs. That is a poor fit if immediate DM alerts are essential. It does not give Prayer First a separate inbox permission. Available controls can differ by account and app version.
Check phone alerts separately from app access
On iPhone, open Settings → Notifications and review the relevant app’s alert settings. Receiving an alert and being able to open the app are separate checks; changing an alert style does not change Prayer First’s protected selection.
Test the whole work path before you need it
On Android, Settings → Notifications → App notifications lets you review the app’s alerts. Some apps expose notification categories; menus vary by phone. A notification category is not a separate app that Prayer First can shield.
Configure the routine when you have time to check it, then test before today’s Bible requirement is already complete. If messages can wait, agree another contact route for anything urgent. This guide is based on official controls and the current blocking implementation; it is not a device test of Instagram messages or notification delivery.
- Try the distracting app you selected before completing the daily requirement. Confirm that the expected shield appears.
- Open the messaging, authentication and navigation tools you need. Review the actual result, including any iPhone category selection, rather than assuming an unselected app is always available.
- Check the alerts you rely on as well as opening the app. A notification preview alone does not prove that you can read or answer the message.
- Complete your configured Bible-app time, or another available completion route, and confirm today’s unlock. Merely opening a Bible app is not the same as reaching the required time.
